Sometimes, poetry is survival.
If our contemporary culture does not develop a meaningful understanding of the metaphors around us, we are going to lose a powerful aspect of cultural consciousness. Metaphor and emotions are inseparable. We have the ability to study the ways in which metaphors have been utilized in the past, and we can come closer to recognizing the various types of emotion from previous eras. Less and less people find importance in supporting the humanities. We must understand the significance of metaphor. Find compassion for emotions conveyed in metaphor, and, possibly, make compassion the first emotional response with each other. The way to do that is to immerse yourself in the arts—into poetry.
I fear that in a world which pays attention to everything so much that nothing at all is noticed, the poetic voice is going to be lost to the mango hearts of the masses.
